While a comic artist often can take all the time he needs to work out the drawing, correct it, fiddle around with the details and sip on a cup of coffee meanwhile, in Traditional Animation it is all about tempo! And anyhow this has been optimized, and anyway which innovative Inventions have been made ever since the first animator began to breathe life into his drawings, all we can do is still reach for the same working material in the main work that has been there since the 30ies: The wooden pencil, and with this, the inevitable and frequent sharpening.
Many studios are using one or more electric sharpeners, which are standing around somewhere, being frequented by the animators periodically. Sometimes, these devices are very expensive, and most of the times, not every animator gets one for his own workstation. Therefore, the short walk to the sharpener, and the occasional waiting time until it is your turn, is a still pretty common sight.
Our approach aimed at creating a small, handy and battery powered little electric sharpener, that is sporting the same high quality milling technology on the inside as in the big ones, yet comming at an affordable price, making it attractive for animation students and smaller studios.
A sharpener that can be upgraded to a full scale wall outlet fed sharpener with a fitting power converter, but also remain flexible due to itââ¬â¢s battery power source, for the times when you are on the go, taking your light board out into the park around the next corner at sunny weather.
Our sharpener features a milling machine that will shave off little layers of your pencil with a row of small blade edges. Doing this, it is very fast, but yet reasonably silent for what it does. The small pencil waste shaves are being gathered in a little box at the front side of the device, which can easily be detached and emptied over a trash can.
The sharpener has been designed to work in the fastest possible way, and the velocity of the milling machine is amazing. Yet you have to be a little careful to not leave the pencil in the miller for too long ââ¬â otherwise it will eat up your pencil. Literally.But you can hear at the sound of the sharpener that the tip of the pencil now reached the maximum sharpness. After getting used to this device, you can manage to always have a pencil with an ideal tip, by using the sharpener for one to two seconds every few minutes.
If not being connected to a wall outlet, the sharpener is powered by 4 regular AA batteries, which are not included in this package. HINT: Our sharpener is very energy efficient, and due to itââ¬â¢s endurance, you can even run it on AA rechargeable batteries for a very long time. This way, you can spare yourself the additional power line on your animation table!
